Atheism and the finality of death argument
More actions
Atheism is simply the belief that there is not enough, or in fact any, scientific evidence for the existence of gods or religions based on gods. Many religions purport to believe that because there are gods with supernatural powers they can and will give people life after death, and even immortality, in exchange for belief in the religion, money, proper behavior, and the indoctrination of others including children. People that come out from under the control of religions reject many of the religious ideas that they have been indoctrinated into believing. One of the most important of these religious ideas is that of life after death---immortality, in an after world like heaven or hell.
When people die there is no direct evidence that their body ever become alive again in spite of what religions say. This belief is not atheism. It is an add on belief belief to atheism. Many atheists believe that there is no life after death and no way to prove it because no one that has actually died and has ever come back to life again. Near death experiences are just that "near death" but not real death experiences. Just because your heart and breathing stops for a short period of time does not mean that your body did not have the ability to restore it functioning back to near normal with the help of science and technology.
Atheism's job is not to prove that life after death is not possible but to assess if the arguments for the existence of god has merit. Atheism, so far, has shown that there is no valid evidence for any gods existence. Atheism has shown that once a god is defined, in may cases, it an be proved to be an illogical, irrational, self contradictory, construct. It is not the purpose of atheism to prove that all forms of life after death are impossible. It is however, atheism's prerogative to show that religious and supernatural forms of immortality are not true and even detrimental to conscious beings (humans). As it is atheism prerogative to be critical of any religious based prediction or pronouncement.
Since the science of superimmortality is not a religious theory with religious predictions and pronouncements, nor is it based on any supernatural concepts like gods, souls, spirits, life forces, after worlds, heavens, hells, purgatory, it should not be grouped into religious theories as irrational and unsupported by science. Superimmortality needs to be judged on it own merits like predictability, explainability, coherence with the totality of science, coherence within itself, simplicity, usefulness, positiveness, meaningfulness, purposefulness, falsifiability, and experimentally based.
Atheism is not a science dealing with conscious life and what produces it. When a body functions in the right way it produces consciousness and ixperiencitness. When it does not it does not function in the right way it does not produce consciousness and ixperiencitness.
