Beliefs matter and inform actions argument
From Aware Theory
More actions
What we believe matters because they inform and direct the actions we take in our lives. Many people are anti-science because they believe that science predicts that death is final. Because of they they end up believing in many irrational things.
Lets consider three belief systems and how they do and would influence our actions.
- The science of superimmortality.
- Religions belief systems like christianity.
- Death is final; there is no conscious existence of a self or ixperiencitness after the death of the original body.
Most people have a good enough life that they wish they could continue to consciously exist longer then they end up doing in one body. The death is final believers "scientifically know" that there is nothing that can be done to consciously exist after the death of their apparent current body.
- Religious belief system are doomed to needing a supernatural way of producing life after death by way of either gods that they have to please forever, or a process like reincarnation that they can not actually control in any way. Your future conscious existence after death is based on the whims of unknowable factors that people are just blindly guessing at.
- Superimmortality is based on the fact that the body but specifically the brain produces consciousness by its functioning that is controlled by way of its current structure and environmental conditions. We know that the brain at each moment is functioning somewhat differently that it did before and after right now. Nonetheless, you still experience these variations in consciousness produced by variations in the structure and functioning of the brain. Over your life time there will be a great deal of variation in what you experience consciously and the way the brain is structured and then functions.
