Continuity arguments for defining the self. Awaretheory defines the concept of self as the ixperiencit concept using the ixperiencit test: If I experience a particular consciousness it is me or my "self". If I do not experience the consciousness it is not me or my "self". I know that I am expereing the consciousness as I am writing this sentence and my consciousness is such that I believe that I did expereince a some what different consciousness in the past and will again in the future. So I do have an ideas of what consciousness is and when I am expereincing it. It is a definition such as a point or line is defined and used in geometry. It is a basic intuitive concept.
The self has been defined philosophically, religiously, personally, and legally, in many different ways. Continuity of some property or object is usually part of this definition. It can be the continuity of the body, soul, memories, consciousness, life force, functioning of the brain, etc. We also have the situation of determining what we want to achieve with the continuity of the particular property or object. What others might want is not necessary what you may want for continuity. For instance, a wife and kids may want the body of the husband and father to looks and behave with continuity and sameness to the past, continuing to supply attention, support, and love. This may be what the husband and father wants as well but there is one more thing that he likely wants that the wife and kids might never know, which is if the husband is actually consciousness and if the husband in the past is the same one that is experiencing the consciousness at the present or future time.
The question for defining the "self" is what types of continuity is necessary for the continuation of the "self" into the future? Awaretheory says that it is the approximate continuation, at any time in the future or past, of a very large amount of different structures and functionings of matter and energy.
The consciousness and or ixperiencitness of the self might be continued in may different types of itobodies, functioning in many different ways, with many different structures, in many different places, and times. The self is not bound by a particular body, or type of body, or group of matter, or supernatural entity like a soul or ghost, or continuity of matter space, or time, or singularity of consciousness or material existence. Consequently, the self is much more than only what you are experiencing at this very moment. The result of yourself being more than what you are this very instance and place, is what ties people together in reality and can lead to a better world for all conscious beings when people believe and utilize these ideas.
