Discreteness versus continuum 3

From Aware Theory

File name discreetness versus continuum File created date 12:28 pm Monday, November 3 2008

The concept of discreetness versus the concept of continuum Some philosophers and many different people who have thought about believe in what I call discreetness of our selves. For instance, some believe that absoluteness indivisibility, and privacy of consciousness and absoluteness, indivisibility, and separateness of a person are metaphysically true. This is by way of their obvious apparent truth that doesn’t need empirical evidence.

A subject can be viewed as an object privacy does not even apply there How can an object be private?-- that is why it is separate

If you take any aspect of consciousness if forms a continuum in other words it can be less or more of that aspect. Sf is

If you take away everything that is a continuum in consciousness there is nothing left. (a continuum argument) Even the concepts of absoluteness, privacy, indivisibility, and separateness are continuum concepts, on many different levels, unless they are self defined. This means that the word defines itself. The concept of absoluteness is absolute. The concept of indivisibility is indivisible, The concept of separateness is separate. The concept of discreetness is discrete. There are degrees of discreetness, absoluteness, privacy, and indivisibility. This brings up concepts like totally absolute, private, discrete, indivisible separate.

There are types of concepts red for instance is like consciousness or the ixperiencit concept. Red is a concept not connected to time, place, or matter. You can specify a particular car having a specific place time and matter but red is not specific to a place time or matter it transcends the three so does consciousness and the ixperiencit concept it is not a concept like an object. It is a adjective that applies to an objects not to one object. Many different objects can be red. Many different objects can have the same consciousness and ixperiencitness.

There is little empirical evidence to support these ideas. If two different people have identical consciousness how can they have privacy. I know what you are thinking your know what I am thinking. A cidentireplica in the future can know what the original will think be consciousness There is no absoluteness in sf, consciousness or ixperiencitness. If two people have the same consciousness, what consciousness attribute is left that we left out?

The red analogy to personal identity: If it is red and looks red from the outside it is not necessary red unless we know if it had a continuous history from a red thing and that there is only one red thing that exists

If it has johns ixperiencit, and looks like it has johns consciousness and ixperiencitness from the outside, it is not necessarily john’s x unless we know if it had a continuous history from johns ixperiencit in the past and that there is only one thing that produces john’s that exists at anyone time

Other philosophers have suggested that you not only have to have the same consciousness. if you do not appear like you were before it would not be you

If I experience something even if it is with out a body that I can see or feel it is still conscious existence for me.

How can this be possible first you have an experience machine

there are two aspects first that consciousness has these properties and that a conscious person has these properties.

Absoluteness of consciousness means that a person is either conscious or he is not conscious there is no in between.

Privacy of consciousness means that no one else can every know what you are conscious of or can ever experience what you are experiencing.

Indivisibility of consciousness means that any division of self is impossible in other words there is no multiplicity of self with any type of fission experiments.

Separateness of consciousness means every consciousness is separate and distinct from every other consciousness The argument for these properties are that we believe these from our personal experience. But reality has to be a reality of the experience of all consciousnesses not just particular perspective, Just because some one sees a ufo and believes it is an alien space ship does not mean that it is an alien space ship. It can be any number of things the reality of which can be very different from one personal perspective. An example is a straight object put in water the object appears bent. Does the object bend and straighten out upon bringing out of the water? Or is the understanding that the light is bent so it only looks like the straight object is bent the correct answer.? Does it only looks like the object is bent?

Experience machine

Many philosophers and other people say that they would not want an experience machine to produce their reality. This is understandable if there is no advantage in the experience machine experiences. There are many cases where an experience machine would be preferred by nearly everyone over reality. First example, this what we think is reality is actually produced by the experience machine. Real reality is a nasty dark cold, damp, stinky, very unpleasant place there is no family no friends only work to keep the experience machine going. You are periodically taken out of this experience machine to do your part in keeping the experience machine going. It is a dying place where there is no way to make a better world out side of the experience. Your friends and family can actually be in the experience machine at other places so when you are communicating with them they are actually real. What you accomplish can also be of value to others in making the reality of the experience better real math can be developed so can many other ideas. Example 2 short experiences in an experience machine like flying with out danger and any kind of device. Traveling through space seeing different places of interest in the universe etc. Seeing different types of realities.

But they suggest that there will
