The Existence of a Soul (Part 2/2) Atheist Experience

From Aware Theory

1:26 If you made an absolutely perfect copy of me somewhere else I wouldn't know I would believe that I was me ---- and I would be right.

2;00 If you kill me I am dead it doesn't matter if you make a copy of me afterwards.

2:42 There are no atoms in this body that was there when I was born.

2:57 The one you killed would be dead.

4:11 But there are still two not one. You still have two physically different things. The fact that I do not know that you swapped it is irrelevant to the fact that there are two physically different things. And if you make an exact copy of me and killed me I am dead. The copy of me gets to exist and the copy of me will have the same thoughts, memories and everything else because it was made at time x and then it will go on living its own life and it is now something else from the second you created it on, it is something else.

you keep getting "me" as a body confused with me as a consciousness If you are your body then after your death you "the body" still exists thus you still exist. But if you are a consciousness that you experience then after death you no longer exist .

5:15 Jen says: I mean one of the things that you can't replicate. If you create a clone of a human and somehow manage to bring that person to adulthood in a short time and popped them out and so you have this clone that is biologically identical ---- you can't replicate all of the experiences that person has been through. We are the some of our experiences to a large extent. The way that we think, what we think, is a product of what we have experienced in life.

5:55 Mat says: "The thing is the that best explanation for consciousness that I am aware of and consciousness is to some extent a puzzle that people are still working out is that consciousness is an emergent property it is a product of what the brain does much like wetness a single molecule of water isn't wet. Are two molecules wet? What about three? When do you get wetness? And yet wetness is a property of water when you put water molecules together. That is not a direct analogy but it comes kind of close."

The analogy given about wetness gives the impression that emergent properties can be identical when the matter that produces them are not identical. Two cups of water can be both have the emergent property of being wet without the water in the cups being identical. Consciousness being an emergent property can be identical without the bodies that produce then being identical. What is the proof that I or "me" is not an emergent property produced by the structure and functioning of the brain? The "me" can then emerge as a property within another body when the right structure and functioning is produced.

If consciousness is an emergent property of matter rather than the matter itself why can't it emerge in different ways? Emergent properties argument for the multiplicity of the self

But the idea that there is something this self awareness this consciousness that gives us this kind of Cartesian sense of self -- thats fact. And whether or not it is understood (I think there for I am or I am conscious there for I am or I exist)

your question about making a duplicate of me it is still a duplicate of me is still not me.

This is like saying If you make a duplicate of wetness it is still a duplicate wetness and not wetness.

And by the way the net effect

part 2 3:40 consciousness as an emergent property

At 5:28 matt says "The reason that a replica is not me is because it is a different set of atoms." Matt is defining the term "me" as the atoms that my body is made of. It however takes more steps to the argument to prove that a cidentireplica can not produce an identical consciousness or an identical ixperiencitness as the original does. To define me as the atoms of may body does not relate the "me" that is defined as my body to the consciousness that it produces.

Why is the same matter with the same structure and functioning over a different period of time not an exact repeat of your life with you experiencing it exactly as you did the first time this event occurred? You can connect this new person to the original person without the original person ever dying

If the same matter at the same placement structure and functioning does not produce a consciousness that you experience what or who is it producing?

Why is it so important for you that there is only one way that reality can produce a consciousness that you will experience? Especially when the evidence points to the fact or shows that this is clearly not the case.
