The brain is not the mind argument
"The brain is not the mind argument". Or "the mind is not the brain argument". If the brain was the mind then rather than the brain produces the mind, when there was no mind there would be no brain. But the brain can exist without the mind existing. this is not identity of the brain with the mind. For the brain to have a mind it has to have one of a set of correct structures and then function in one of a set of correct ways. By chaining the structure and functioning of the same brain an enumerable amount of different minds can be produced. Also a different brain by having the same structure and functioning can produce the same mind. This is a very different relationship to the brain is the mind or the mind is the brain.
There is also another factor involved and this is the assumption that the brain is actually producing the mind. How do we know that the brain is producing the mind? Because, we have amassed a large amount of scientific evidence that each of us have a brain and that when this brain is changed or changing the mind is changed or changing as well. However, with the advent of computers and the understanding of the senses we realize that we do not have to have a body we could just be a brain stimulated by a computer like device that makes us think that we have a human body. In just a few short decades we have gone from no computers to reality creating computers. It thus seem likely that eventually we could produce computers so complex that any total reality desired can be created for a brain itself. If this is possible It might already exist. We can not be certain that the reality that we experience is real or created by a reality creating computer like device. If our reality is created then we might not have human bodies and not even biological brains. It is hard to believe that something, at least partially material, is not producing our minds. But there is also the energy aspect of the change that is necessary to produce the mind. We do not know how much or how little matter is necessary to produce a mind? It might be that the mind can be created by the functioning of energy alone. If this is the case, or can be the case, then we would not say that the brain is the mind or the mind is the brain but that some combination of matter and energy over time produces the mind.
